Kukla Primary School was devastated in landslides in 2023. We were invited by SEEDS to redesign the school. The focus was to designing minimally, only as much as it was necessary and leaving spaces for incremental growth.
The design process started with community participation - taking inputs from children, teachers and other village stakeholders through various exercises. We also used Agumented Reality to help masons and community understand and engage with the design before execution begen.
We salvaged materials from the destroyed school, including bricks and even concrete debris and used it in rebuilding. Along with the local artisanship and building techniques, we also introduced shallow brick domes - something that local masons saw for the first time.
In collaboration with SEEDS which managed construction and management, we focused on participatory design, circularity, and ecological responsiveness.
