A Story of Three Courtyards

Project Type

Residential

Date

2022

Collaboration

Aagaur

Location

Bhopal

Area

4500 square feet

This 4,500 ft² home threads three distinct courtyards through brick domes, lime‑plastered adobe walls and reclaimed timber, balancing daylight, privacy and passive cooling for a modern joint family.

Roofscape
Varying‑height brick domes cap the larger rooms; oculi at each crown vent rising heat.
Flat stone slabs in select areas lend mass and a calm in a way, a monastic feel.

Walls & Skins
A mixed palette of fired brick and stabilised adobe keeps embodied carbon low; traditional lime plaster regulates humidity. Use of Rat trap bonds helps insulation further.

Salvage & Surface
Doors and windows come from dismantled houses, adding pre‑loved character. Floors mix hand‑cast Galicha tiles (local oxide colours) and verandah mosaics of broken ceramics otherwise bound for landfill.

The Three Courts

Street Court – semi‑public arrival and social spill‑over.
Family Court – shaded heart of the home; herbs and a hand‑pump anchor daily life.
Sky Court – intimate, perfumed with night‑blooming plants for starlit bedrooms.
